BOCA alongside the Victorian Ornithological Research Group (VORG) and the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union (RAOU) were responsible for influencing the State Government to set aside land for conservation which ultimately became the Yellingbo Nature Conservation Area (YNCA). In 1952 Survey Cassidix was organised by BOC (as BOCA was known then) and RAOU. It lasted for ten years and was followed by further VORG surveys. The data from this long term surveying provided the evidence to persuade the Government to take action and in 1967 the first declaration of land set aside for the reserve was announced. BOCA was also at the head of the push to have the Helmeted Honeyeater recognised as the State Avifaunal (Bird) Emblem. The Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater recognisethe work of BOCA, VORG and RAOU.  Community as drivers for change. Past, present and future On 23 May 1989, the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater (the Friends) was born. It was due to the determination of the late Steve Craig. Steve knew that the Helmeted Honeyeater needed the community to know about its plight. This was a bird heading for extinction, in our lifetime,if something didn't change. Steve organised a public meeting for 23 May 1989, and Victorian's answered Steve's call to action. Landholders quickly showed an interest in undertaking conservation works. Their enthusiasm attracted substantial funding from all levels of government and the project area has expanded to allow engagement of more landholders in conservation action. Beyond Yellingbo now works with landholders on nearly 85 properties. We have a 5 year plan to continue to engage with landholders along all of the creeks that flow in and out of Yellingbo Nature Conservation Area, the only home of the critically endangered Helmeted Honeyeater and lowland Leadbeater's Possum. It was due to the determination of the late Steve Craig that the public answered his call to do something about the plight of the Helmeted Honeyeater. Prior to Steve Craig rallying the public to become involved in conservation of the state bird, Bird Observation & Conservation Australia formerly Bird Observer's Club of Australia (BOCA) had worked for many years to save the Helmeted Honeyeater. BOCA alongside the Victorian Ornithological Research Group (VORG) and the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union (RAOU) were responsible for influencing the State Government to set aside land for conservation which ultimately became the the Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve (YNCR). In 1952 Survey Cassidixwas organised by BOC (as it was known then) and RAOU. It lasted for ten years and was followed by further VORG surveys. The data from this long term surveying provided the evidence to persuade the Government to take action and in 1967 the first declaration of land set aside for the reserve was announced. BOCA was also at the head of the push to have the Helmeted Honeyeater recognised as the State Avifaunal Emblem. The Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater recognise the work of Steve Craig, BOCA, VORG and RAOU. A biodiversity hotspot The Woori Yallock Creek sub-catchment has been recognised by all levels of government and the general community for its natural values. The portion of the Catchment in the vicinity of Yellingbo Nature Conservation Area (YNCA, renamed in Dec 2021 from Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve) that adjoins private landholdings and other bushland remnants on private and public land further upstream are of particular biodiversity significance. The Helmeted Honeyeater, Leadbeater's Possum and a host of other rare and threatened plants and animals inhabit the remnant bushland in this populated rural area just 50km from Melbourne. The LLBP prefers habitat with dense midstorey of Melaleuca and Leptospermum, and inhabits the Mountain Swamp Gum. It is a Critically Endangered species and is Victoria's faunal emblem. YNCA is the only place in the world where three of Victoria's state emblems co-exist. The other faunal state emblem not found in Yellingbo? Weedy Seadragon. Scientific name Gymnobelideus leadbeateri How did it get its name? The generic name Gymnobelideus means “naked dart” referring to the lack of a flying membrane, and the species name leadbeateri was named after J. Leadbeater who was the taxidermist at the National Museum of Victoria. What does it look like? Leadbeater's Possums are grey to greyish-brown above and paler below with a dark mid-dorsal (along centre of back) stripe. They have an average body length of 15-17cm and a total length (including the tail) of around 33cm. They weigh an average of 100 – 165 grams. It is recognised by its characteristic baseball bat shaped tail, which is narrower at the base. Habitat Leadbeater's Possum are endemic to Victoria, existing nowhere else but the montane ash forests of the Central Highlands, alpine Snow Gum forests between Lake Mountain and Mt. Baw Baw and the Lowland Leadbeater's Possum at Yellingbo Nature Conservation Area (YNCA). Honeyeaters are unique to Australasia with around 170 species recorded. Most honeyeaters are nectar feeding birds with long, brush-tipped tongues which function in the same way as a paintbrush, soaking up fluids by capillary action. Most honeyeaters can protrude their tongues well beyond the tips of their beaks, enabling nectar collection from the base of long tubular flowers, honeydew extraction from deep, narrow cracks in bark and collection of manna from damaged tree trunks and branches. They lap up these fluids at rates of 10 or more licks per second and can empty a flower in less than one second. Honeyeater beaks are thin, curved and sharply pointed, reflecting to some extent the sorts of flowers they frequent. Honeyeaters are not totally dependent on nectar. For some, such as the Helmeted Honeyeater, nectar only forms around 25% of their diet (for Helmeted Honeyeaters, we can estimate this from what the captive breeding program provides). In 1971, the Helmeted Honeyeater was chosen as Victoria's bird emblem because it represented what was unique and special about Victoria's fauna.
