Be part of the team saving Victoria’s state faunal emblems!
The Yellingbo Nature Conservation Area is a unique biodiversity hotspot and one of few critical habitat areas on earth where Victoria’s critically endangered bird emblem—the Helmeted Honeyeater—and mammal emblem—the Lowland Leadbeater’s Possum—coexist in the wild.
As a registered charity, the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater work directly on the ground to grow, enhance, and protect the vital swamp gum habitat these two extraordinary species need to survive. But we can’t do it alone. Birds and animals are the ultimate indicators of environmental health; when you help them thrive, you heal the entire ecosystem.
Ready to roll up your sleeves and help shape the future of threatened species conservation?

Be inspired, get involved!

    • Volunteering at the Yellingbo Indigenous Nursery: Get your hands dirty at our community-run nursery. You’ll help propagate vital native tubestock from local seeds and materials, providing the literal foundation for future forest habitat for our faunal emblems.
    • Seeds & weeds activities: Join our once-a-month twilight and weekend sessions. It’s a social, rewarding way to collect indigenous seeds and clear out invasive plants that threaten fragile habitat.
    • Citizen science & surveys: Become a scientist in the field. Participate in flora, fauna, and bird-monitoring surveys using platforms like Birdata and iNaturalist to gather real-world ecological data.
    • Environmental education: Expand your mind and teach others. Access specialised workshops, community presentations, and field excursions that dive deep into the ecology of the Yarra Valley.
    • Exclusive access: As a member, you’ll be invited to members-only tree planting days, expert speaker events, and unique opportunities to view wild Helmeted Honeyeaters in their natural habitat.
